I think the fact that the 8th District hasn’t seen that much modern negativity has been the result that it hasn’t been viewed as a competitive district. Challengers had no money and Oberstar could be magnanimous in repeated landslide victories. That’s why his one negative attempt was so pathetic. The malice was real but the skills weren’t there.
