Metrodome collapses under heavy snow

The roof of the Metrodome collapsed last night under the estimated 17-20 inches of snow that fell in yesterday’s near-record Minnesota blizzard. Fortunately today’s Vikings football game had already been rescheduled for Monday (and now probably some other time, possibly some other place). It bears mentioning that the officials’ decision to postpone the game was very wise, despite the cost, inconvenience and consternation caused. The sort of disaster that might have occurred had the roof collapsed with a stadium full of fans is troubling to consider.

It seems the roof hasn’t entirely given way. One witness in the MPR story described the dome as a “big bowl of sugar.” There’s a press conference today at 10 a.m. where the damage will be described in better detail.
