Doc “Moonlight” Graham Days begin today in Chisholm, Minnesota. The long weekend of events pay tribute to the longtime town doctor who enjoyed a short stint in Major League Baseball, unbeknownst to many he served. This served as the inspiration for a character of the same name in the W.P. Kinsella novel “Shoeless Joe,” which became the major motion picture “Field of Dreams” starring Kevin Costner, where Doc was portrayed by Burt Lancaster.
(Kinsella also wrote a book called “The Iowa Baseball Confederacy” that I loved as a teenager, which has a cameo by Teddy Roosevelt.)
Several community events begin Wednesday and run through the week in Chisholm. Check out the schedule. Below the jump you’ll find the Saturday lineup as printed in the Hibbing Daily Tribune. Sunday caps off Moonlight Graham Days with the Tamburitzan show at the Minnesota Discovery Center.

Saturday, Aug. 10, is chock-full of events.
At 9 a.m. is the Longyear Lake 5K Fun Run/Walk. Pre-registration is under way and may be completed by going to http://longyerlakefunrun5k.wix.com.
Cost is $20 until Aug. 1. Then from the price increases to $25.
There will also be a Lil’ Tykes race for children following the 5K. It will consist of a half-mile race out and back on the Bridge of Peace.
The annual Doc “Moonlight Days” Parade is scheduled to begin at noon Saturday, Aug. 10. Chisholm Area Chamber of Commerce Events Coordinator Amy Rice said registrations are being accepted for the parade right up to the day of the event.
Some of the talent secured for this year’s parade include entertainers from the Mississippi Showboat, the Shriner’s dune buggies and small cars, and a drum group called, “Sheltered Reality.” Rice said there would also be return appearances from crowd favorites, such as the Eveleth Clown Band.
Other events taking place on Saturday afternoon include a car show on Lake Street, the Kiwanis ice cream social at Kiwanis Park and a pie social fundraiser to raise money for World Hunger at Faith Lutheran Church.
On Saturday evening, the fun continues with a Block Party and street dance on the 200 block of Lake Street.
